Importance Of Nickel In Stainless Steel Industry


Metals are those substances that have a great impact on our lives. We are surrounded by metals, and there are many things made up of metals that we use ok daily basis. Iron, copper, gold, silver, etc. are some of the commonly used metals which are available at our houses too. However, Nickel is one of the special kind, as it is a transition metal and it's hard and ductile nature makes it fit for the industrial use. It has a lustrous appearance with a golden tinge in its colour. The importance of Nickel lies in the fact that it is widely used by the stainless steel product manufacturers on a large scale. Stated below are some of the things that show the importance of Nickel in the stainless-steel industry:
  • Corrosion Resistant Nature: Nickel is one of the important ingredients in the making of stainless-steel items as it is responsible for providing the corrosion-resistant nature to it. Stainless steel is basically an alloy which is a mixture of two or more metals. The alloy in which chromium is used cannot impart high resistance, whereas the one with Nickel can assure better protection from the external environmental factors.
  • Tough & Strong: An alloy mixture that produces Chromium carbon steels are not that tough as compared to the ones made by the addition of Nickel. That is, when Nickel is added to the chromium mixture, it offers compensation to the decreased toughness and provides strength to the stainless steel produced.
  • Helps in preventing ferromagnetism: Also, chromium added into the alloy for the formation of stainless steel possesses ferromagnetism (a mechanism by which some metals form permanent magnets or attaches to the magnet). This property is not favourable for the steel to stay applicable for various industrial purposes. In this case, Nickel helps to remove or reverse the effect of this ferromagnetism and makes the stainless steel valid for many applications.
  • Prevents oxidation: Nickel is also found to enhance the corrosion resistance during varying temperatures, especially at high temperatures when the moisture level or humidity in increased in the air and various oxides could harm the metal. Nickel effectively prevents those oxides from causing any damage to the stainless-steel product.
  • Recyclable: Creating stainless steel using Nickel would not have any kind of negative impact on the environment too. This is because metals like Nickel are completely recyclable and decreases the need to utilise virgin metal each time. Thus, after the use of the product, Nickel can be extracted from the scrap and can be reused to produce the new stainless steel.
From the information given above, we can conclude that Nickel alloys are any day better than those stainless steels made up of using chromium or other mixtures. Nickel truly enhances stainless steel and imparts various properties like strength, sustainability, welding ability, high-temperature resistance, etc. Thus, it is necessary to check the composition of alloy before buying it. It is important for the stainless steel product manufacturers to opt for stainless steel made up of Nickel for their production. There are many stainless steel product manufacturers in India who mostly make use of Nickel alloys in their manufacturing process.
